taiwan’s eastern grass owl died during the rat eradication?! unlike the other owls, the endangered taiwan’s eastern grass owls prefer to live on hills and the ground. with all the habitat destruction and shortage in food, there are now less than 50 of them in taiwan. one of their main food source are rodents, and taiwan happened to plan to have their national rat eradication week during the grass owls’ breeding season, which has caused many of them died after eating the poisoned rats. the environmental protection department agreed to move the rat eradication week and reduce the use and toxicity of rat poison, hoping to bring less harm to the grass owls. however, the locals from the grass owls habitat said, some are planning to develop that area into a new residential town, which would make the situation even worse for the grass owl and putting them in bigger danger.
